Little Lenten Oratory

Yesterday, my 6 year old son helped set up our prayer space for Lent. Our Lenten things have been around for years, and it Lent is the season that really started my habit of keeping a prayer space sacred and fixed in our home.

(I know flowers aren’t very liturgical during Lent, but they came as a lovely surprise from my in-laws, and my helper wanted to put some here. I love his interest in helping make our space beautiful.)

This year, we have three purple votive holders, a purple linen, the Divine Mercy Jesus statue (very fitting for this Jubilee Year of Mercy!), and prayers inspired by St. John Paul II, written by Donna Marie Cooper O’Boyle. On Fridays, we will add the Stations of Cross at bedtime.

I also have the children’s Jesus Calling devotional, which we read from a few times a week in the mornings.

In the frames, I replaced the previous art with these images of Christ from the back of my copy of The Little Oratory: A Beginner’s Guide to Praying in the Home. They seem so appropriate for Lent, don’t you think? (and this bonus artwork in the back of The Little Oratory: A Beginner’s Guide to Praying in the Home is a great reason to buy this book in print!)

This little statue was the first we added to our prayer table almost 8 years ago. He’s not quite indestructible, but I haven’t found a Fontanini version yet (which would be harder to break if dropped).

I’m very happy with our Lenten space, and appreciate the simplicity of setting it up since I’ve collected the items and store them in a small box! What does your prayer space look like right now? I’d love to see!
