Make-Up Tips for the Rushed and Know-Nothing Ladies (aka: me)

So, I’m nearly 34 years old, and know next to nothing about make-up. True story, friends. I rarely wear it. I wore Mary Kay for our wedding, and a few times after that. Then, when we lived in NY (about 8 years ago) I bought some Bare Minerals…which is still in my possession. I know, call the make-up police!! I am holding on to (and sometimes even using!) crazy old make-up. While Fence says he likes my natural look (Thanks, Babe, you’re so awesome), I sometimes still want to look like a grown-up and would like to know how to put on a pretty face without a crazy high-maintenance routine. Let’s face it, right now I rinse/wash my face in the shower with hot water and then apply coconut oil when I get out. That is the extent of my beauty routine. Soooo…I called on my bloggy/FB friend Amanda for some tips. She was so kind as to even include pictures from start to finish! And apparently, with some practice, it all can be done in 5 minutes. Five! I can live with that. I promise to follow-up with my own look soon. You know, when I’ve recovered from being sick (which I am right now).

Being a homeschooling mom to four young kids, I don’t have tons of time to spend on my makeup. Gina asked me to share a quick everyday makeup look with all of you.
Skincare is really important. Eat right, drink plenty of water. Take the time to remove your makeup, wash your face morning and night. Use a good moisturizer, for daytime choose a lotion that absorbs quickly, so you don’t have to wait to apply your makeup.
Start with a good foundation, there are tons of options depending on the type of coverage you want. BB or CC creams are a great option for this look, most combine moisturizer, anti-aging, and coverage. Use powder to set, it’ll help your foundation stay all day.
Use a concealer under your eyes and on any other blemishes you’d like to cover. Pick something a touch lighter than your skin tone. Concentrate on the inner corner, where many women have darkness. You can apply concealer with a concealer brush, or your ring finger. If using your finger, tap the concealer, to get the desired coverage. Use powder to set.

Now let’s talk COLOR! This is the fun part. The options are endless. Makeup trends are always changing, so I’ll walk you through a classic look.
For eyes, a shadow primer will make your eye makeup stay all day. I like to use two eye shadows to highlight and contour my eyes. Brush a light color starting at your lash line blending up into the crease, if you don’t have a crease about midway to your brow. Next, use a darker coordinating color on the outer corner of they eye, blending into the crease. You can use a blending brush or your finger to soften any hard edges. Use a eyeliner pencil to line your top lashes, start in the outer corner and use short strokes, finish about the midpoint of your eye. Some find the dot-dash method helpful. If you’d prefer a softer look, you can line your eyes with a dark eyeshadow and a liner brush. Finish with a few coats of mascara. To apply mascara, start at the base of your lashes and wiggle the brush a little to deposit the mascara.

Blush warms up your face, and adds contour to the face. Powder is the easiest to work with. Smile, and start by brushing the color on the apples of your cheeks, blending out towards your ear. I like to add a touch to my nose too. Blend until you have the desired look. Bronzer can be added to your cheeks, nose, and chin.
Lips are my very favorite, so many fun colors and formulas to try. Start with a lip liner, choose a color close to your natural lip color. You can either outline your natural lip, or some women like to fill in the entire lip, this helps lipstick to wear longer. You can add a lipstick or gloss over the top.
Give your brows a quick brush.

You’re done! This whole look can be done in five minutes with a little practice.

    1. That is a great question. I had contacts when I wore make-up so many years ago for our weddings…and I am pretty sure I did make-up after I put my contacts in. I’ll make sure Amanda sees your comment for some advice!

    2. I used to wear contacts, I always put them in after. Some people find their lenses move around putting on eye shadow. You could really do either way, though. So, do what feels right. You might need a magnifying mirror if you put them in after.

  1. Love this post! I put on the bare minimum if any on the daily but I recently (yeseterday) bought a red lipstick! I feel so fancy and all kinds of pretty when I put it on. I never thought I could pull of a red but this one works and I’m kind of loving it! ๐Ÿ™‚ All else fails, I will put on the red lips ๐Ÿ˜‰ Look forward to your follow-up Gina ๐Ÿ™‚
