Sunday Dinner for the Weary

| | |

I don’t know about you, but when Sunday comes around, I am tired and would like nothing better than to rest all day after worshiping at Mass with my family. As quaint as a big Sunday dinner sounds, I just don’t have the energy for it. Once in a while, maybe. Especially in the winter, when I can put a roast in the crock pot or oven and let it do its thing for several hours…otherwise, I’d rather not be in the kitchen on Sunday. The exception is that Fence and I cook pancakes and sausage and eggs together on Sundays after Mass, which has been a “thing” for us for years and years.

So what is a girl to do when her family is still hungry for that third meal of the day, and she’s seriously just wanted to veg out with a book, sew, or play games with the kids on Sunday afternoons?

Sometimes I whip up a quick soup.

Sometimes we grill–and by “we” I mean Fence grills hot dogs and burgers or something I marinated the night before.

Other times, I have found that a nice salad will do the trick.

Why yes, I did use this photo for another post. How observant of you. I am using it again because it works, and this is the imperfect blog, remember? 😉

Actually the idea came to me last weekend, so time will tell if this is a lasting, winning idea. I cleaned and tore the lettuce leaves, chopped some veggies, shredded some cheese, and set out some lunchmeat. We had a quick and easy salad bar dinner. It took me no more than 30 minutes to prepare, and it was healthy and satisfying (enough). Sure, we weren’t stuffed. But we were nourished. And I didn’t have to spend a long time preparing dinner, meaning I had time to spend resting. Rest. Ah. What we’re meant to do on Sundays so our weary souls can find refreshment.

What do you make for dinner on Sundays? Any faves to share with my family? Anything simple, that is? 😉

  1. I am with you on wanting to just rest on Sundays! We often to go my parents for dinner on Sundays. No cooking FTW! But when we’re home we try to keep it simple. I like to do what I call “French picnic dinner”. Baguette slices, some nice meats and cheeses, grapes, and a bottle of wine, of course!

    1. Hi, Anna! I loved your comment! My parents lived in France for a while and we always had “picnic dinner” growing up – just as you described it 🙂 I serve my own family picnic dinner if we’re traveling and have to have dinner on the road or if we’re eating light before an event, etc…
Gina – I too, am weary by Sunday. I prefer not to cook a dinner that night, especially as I feel like I have to reserve my energy for getting going again Monday morning. Sunday nights, we usually eat a meal that I prepared earlier in the week by doubling a recipe, or my husband grills out (what he’s did this evening.) He even kept it dirty-dishes-free by giving them hand-held raw veggies and hot dogs in a bun so they could eat in the yard 🙂 i love taking it easy on Sundays!
